The City Police create a unit affiliated to the Prosecution Service

The Mayor of Barcelona and the senior prosecutor for Catalonia sign an agreement making the City Police the first local police force in the Spanish state with a unit affiliated to the Prosecution Service. The unit will come into operation at the start of 2025 and make the criminal response more agile in cases of repeat offending.

This pioneering initiative aims to strengthen operational and practical collaboration in criminal investigation, with a special focus on repeat reoffending. The agreement will allow the City Police to provide key information to transform minor procedures in processes prior to the summary procedure where the law allows it.

The agreement not only improves the response to recurring offences but also increases protection for victims and makes the process for urgent investigations more agile. At the same time, it enables Barcelona’s police corps to provide support for duty prosecutors in cases referred through statements from the City Police, such as swift procedures for minor offences and the collection and processing of key information on previous criminal records.

The new unit will collaborate in cases of domestic and gender violence, with actions to locate, protect and refer victims, and also work with other police corps to avoid duplicity and ensure the efficient management of cases.

The unit will also be able to intervene in urgent and immediate procedures for minor offences, pre-procedural and post-procedural investigations in the municipal sphere and inspections at establishments involving labour exploitation and illicit activities.

The officers will functionally answer to the Prosecution Service and correspond organically to the City Police Investigation Unit.
