Umbracle renovation to restore the building’s original appearance
The project to restore and adapt the Umbracle in Parc de la Ciutadella has received initial approval. The work aims to restore the historic building while improving its safety conditions and making it more comfortable and sustainable.
With the aim of modernising the Umbracle and transforming it into a scientific outreach centre open to the public, the renovation will restore the building’s original appearance, as designed by Josep Fontseré in 1883. The roof, façades, structure, flooring and two doors will all be refurbished, allowing the currently closed Plaça de Fontseré to reopen. The works, which have a budget of two million euros, are planned to be carried out over two phases. The first, covering the building’s interior, will begin in the first quarter of 2026 and last ten months. The second phase, which will focus on the four exterior façades, is scheduled for 2027 and is expected to take five months.
The Umbracle currently contains a variety of plant species that will be protected during the renovation, as one of the project’s key aims is to enhance the landscape features of the Umbracle. Listed as a cultural asset of local interest, the Umbracle, together with the Hivernacle, the Castell dels Tres Dragons and the Centre Martorell d’Exposicions, forms part of the heritage axis of the Ciutadella Knowledge Hub — a pioneering scientific and urban development project dedicated to transforming the park and its surroundings into a leading European hub for knowledge, outreach, research and innovation.
