Rubber flooring removed from 39 municipal nursery schools
Renovation of outdoor flooring at 39 municipal nursery schools has been completed, prompted by natural wear and tear and the heat the old surfaces emitted during the summer months. While there was no immediate risk to children’s health, the old rubber flooring has been replaced with more durable, stable materials designed to withstand the heavy use of playgrounds.

The work involved removing the old rubber flooring and installing high-quality materials with improved thermal performance and greater durability. At the same time, playground equipment that needed adapting to the new surfaces was updated or replaced with approved equipment suitable for hard surfaces that meets all current safety standards. These upgrades also enhance the thermal comfort of outdoor spaces, which will be further improved by the gradual addition of awnings and shaded areas.
The nursery schools where the rubber flooring has been removed are: Puigmal, Aurora, Germanetes, Trencadís, Cadí, Leonor Serrano, El Tren de Fort Pienc, Carabassa, Guinardó, La Fassina, Portal Nou, Sant Medir, Casa dels Nens, Montserrat, Barrufets, Albí, Marina, Sant Genís, Aqüeducte, Can Dragó, Xarlot, Londres, Icària, Alchemika, Caspolino, Xiroi, Galatea, El Torrent, Pere Calafell, Pau, Colometa, Enxaneta, Tres Turons, El Timbal, La Verneda de Sant Martí, Pla de Fornells, Bellmunt, L’Aliança and El Vent.
The project, which is being led by Barcelona’s Municipal Institute of Education (IMEB), received an investment of €1.3 million.
