Fewer cats and dogs abandoned in the first half of 2022

The number of abandoned cats and dogs taken in by the Barcelona Pet Shelter (CAACB) fell by 20% in the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year. This downward trend has continued since 2016, thanks to awareness campaigns about responsible ownership. In addition, 150 dogs and 123 cats have been adopted so far this year.

To be precise, the centre took in 294 dogs in the first six months of the year (compared to 315 in the same period last year) and 227 cats (compared to 319). The main cause of cats and dogs being abandoned was unwanted litters. In the case of dogs, most were breeds regarded as potentially dangerous.

Despite these data, nearly 200 dogs and 100 cats at the CAACB are waiting for a family to give them a second chance, such a Zhemi, Omar, Tigre, Coco and Nala. An estimated 14% of abandoned animals end up living at shelters permanently. This explains why the “Adopta un invisible campaign is still active this summer, promoting responsible adoption and finding families for pets which have been at the centre for a long time due to their age or a chronic condition.

Pet adoption is a highly rewarding act of responsibility, solidarity and humanity for both the animal and the person adopting it. Even so, people need to bear in mind that an animal is not a toy, but rather a living being which needs attention and affection during its entire life. Because of this, it is important to take into consideration the type of animal, its size, coat, age, sex and the time we can devote to it.

Staff at the CAACB provide advice from the outset for people interested in adopting, helping them to choose the animal which will best adapt the characteristics of the new home.
