Consortium constituted for the future Campus de Salut Clínic – Universitat de Barcelona
The Porta Diagonal – Campus Clínic consortium is formally set up to coordinate the construction project for the new Campus de Salut Clínic - Universitat de Barcelona, a key project with an investment of 1,700 million euros. The consortium has the mission of promoting the new hospital, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona and the rest of the support facilities, university, science and research units that form part of it.
This strategic project, which should be ready in 2035, will make Catalonia a leading country in healthcare in Europe, firmly backing quality care and biomedical innovation with a solid commitment to university education and research.
The new consortium is made up of the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona Hospital Clínic Consortium, the University of Barcelona, the municipal councils of Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona Provincial Council and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.
Purchase of the site as a key step forward
The Government of Catalonia will invest 135.25 million euros to acquire the land at Av. Diagonal, 695-797 (current the UB Sports Service) and give a direct subsidy to the UB of up to 17.5 million euros to partially fund the construction of the new pharmaceutical faculty.
International architecture competition
In July 2026, six months before the expected project, an international architecture competition for the future campus will be convened. The goal is to attract the best proposals and ideas from architecture professionals from around the world, in the year when Barcelona is the World Capital of Architecture.
Urban planning and connectivity
The Urban Planning Master Plan (PDU) will provide the spatial organisation of the future campus and its surroundings, with work to get under way in 2030 and conclude midway through 2035. The campus will group together housing, facilities, green spaces and economic activity linked to life sciences in a mixed urban site of 300,000 square metres.
A new L3 metro station will improve the accessibility in the area. The plan is to extend the L3 from Zona Universitària as far as Esplugues Centre, with work starting midway through 2028 and the new campus station to come into service in 2035.
