Aribau and Muntaner to get new service lanes to free up pavements

This Participatory Budgets initiative involves replacing one of the four traffic lanes on both streets with 900 new parking spaces for motorcycles, 90 loading/unloading points and space for waste containers. The project affects the section between Av. Diagonal and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, in the Eixample district.

The new service lanes will be located on the Besòs side of C/ Muntaner and on the Llobregat side of C/ Aribau. Both streets will maintain two lanes for cars and one for public transport, with pavements freed up to create more space for pedestrians.

The service lanes will include 90 new loading/unloading points to improve the distribution of goods in these busy commercial streets. There will also be 900 parking spaces for motorcycles painted on the road to prevent them from parking on the pavement. Finally, the waste containers that were previously on the pavement will be moved to these new lanes. As an exceptional measure, the service lanes will not encroach on busy sections leading up to left turns, leaving an exclusive turning lane.

This initiative, which will cost around €115,000, was voted for in the Participatory Budgets process and has been developed with its promoter, the Esquerra de l’Eixample Local Residents’ Association.

Impact on mobility

Carrer d’Aribau: two traffic lanes closed over the weekend of 27 and 28 January. From 29 January to 9 February, two lanes for traffic and one lane for buses will be operational.
