The Vallmitjana Brothers

18 December 2019 – 18 February 2020

Every year, during the Christmas period, we exhibit nativity-scene pieces from the museum's magnificent collection.

2019 was the centenary of the death of the sculptor Venanci Vallmitjana i Barbany (Barcelona, 1830-1919). Between the second half of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, he, his brother Agapit Vallmitjana i Barbany and his son Agapit Vallmitjana i Abarca, revitalised Catalan sculpture. They started their sculptural careers by modelling nativity-scene figures. The figures are baroque, like those made by nearly all artists at that time, they show great movement and have a certain predilection for accompanying animals.
