Barcelona, esplendor i crisi del segle XV
This book aims to provide new foundational knowledge about the history of 15th-century Barcelona
A pivotal period not only for the city, but for the rest of Catalonia, the Crown of Aragon and Western Europe as well. This is a collaborative work, the result of a long-standing historiographical reflection, driven primarily by Ramon Grau.
There was a need to renew the historical narrative of 15th-century Barcelona, with particular attention to fiscal and financial matters, which had been largely neglected in previous historiography. The work also offers a counterpoint in the case of Valencia, with the construction of the llotja [trading hall] as an emblematic element, and presents an interesting comparison with Zaragoza, based on original research. It also examines some of the main effects of the 15th-century crisis on the island of Mallorca.
The data presented will not settle the debate on the late medieval crisis in the Catalan capital, which resurfaces each time—unfortunately—the city is faced with new situations of this kind. Nonetheless, we hope it will be useful both to specialist researchers and to the general public in gaining a clearer understanding of a 15th century marked by both splendour and crisis.
