Barcelona Municipal Band in a Festive Mood

The ensemble presents a Christmas concert conducted by José R. Pascual-Vilaplana, featuring soprano Maria Hinojosa, the Bruckner Choir and the Madrigal Choir.

Two choirs, a soprano, and works by two of today’s great Catalan composers, Salvador Brotons and Albert Guinovart — all under the baton of maestro José R. Pascual-Vilaplana. That’s how the Barcelona Municipal Band celebrates the Christmas season. Want to hear how it all comes together? Don’t miss the concert on Sunday, 14 December at L’Auditori.

The Christmas Concert of the Barcelona Municipal Band is presented by a musical institution founded in 1886 and essential to understanding the evolution of symphonic music in Catalonia. Led by maestro Pascual-Vilaplana, the ensemble celebrates the season with music by two of the most important Catalan composers of our time.

Alongside the Municipal Band, you’ll hear two leading choral ensembles: the Bruckner Barcelona Choir, directed by Júlia Sesé, and the Madrigal Choir under the direction of Pere Lluís Biosca. The soloist is soprano Maria Hinojosa (pictured), a Sabadell-born artist who has emerged as one of the standout vocal talents of recent years.

She began her vocal studies in Sabadell, earned her degree in voice and Lied at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, and completed a master’s degree in music research at the International University of Valencia. Beyond her operatic career, you may know her from El dúo de “La africana” — directed by Xavier Albertí at Teatre Lliure in 2007 — or from Carta blanca a Lluïsa Cunillé in 2011, for which she was once again nominated for Best Musical Actress at the Premis Butaca.

Together, the choirs, soprano and band will perform Gloria by Albert Guinovart — a piece originally composed in 2019, now presented for the first time in a band arrangement at the Municipal Band’s Christmas concert.

The programme continues with Catalan Carols, a collection of traditional melodies rearranged and reimagined by Salvador Brotons. These carols reflect the spiritual character of the season and convey universal messages of love and peace.

If you’d like to enjoy a musical Christmas with Barcelona Municipal Band, come hear them perform alongside soprano Maria Hinojosa, the Bruckner Barcelona Choir and the Madrigal Choir. Before you go, be sure to check all details on L’Auditori’s website.
