The Centre LGTBI de Barcelona is screening 'Dykes, Camera, Action!'
The documentary gathers the story of the Nou Cinema Queer, narrated by the women that made it possible, from its marginalisation to the present day.
The Centre LGTBI de Barcelona is a meeting and support point for the collectives that make it up. In addition, it is a space for reflection and visibility on sexual and gender diversity. On 10 December, they will be screening Dykes, Camera, Action!.
The American documentary, directed by Caroline Berler in 2018, describes lesbian and queer cinema history through the testimonies of the women that made it a reality. For her, "it was an act of justice that was long overdue because for a long time lesbians did not get to see themselves represented on screen" – hence the importance and the necessity of self-representation. Berler herself, lacking references in the Texan city of San Antonio, where she lived, claims that she probably watched the movies High Art (1998) and I'm a cheerleader (1999), which she compulsively rented from the video store, more than five thousand times.
The movie, which is the director's first feature film, begins its journey in the experimental cinema of the 1970s all the way until reaching the rise of the New Queer Cinema with filmmakers such as Barbara Hammer, Su Friedrich, Rose Troche, Cheryl Duñe, Yoruba Richen, Desiree Akhavan or Vicky Du. They all tell hilarious stories about their lives and discuss how they have expressed their lesbian and queer identities through their respective filmographies.
The cast is completed with the testimony of film critics such as B. Ruby Rich or writer Jenni Olson. It also pays tribute to many influential films in the lesbian and queer world, including Before Stonewall (1984), Desert Hearts (1985), Go Fish (1994), The Celluloid Closet (1995), Bound (1996), The Watermelon Woman (1996), The Joy of Life (2005), This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006), Carol (2015), and the TV series The L Word (2004-2009).
The screening of the movie will be in person and free. However, you will need to book your seat in advance through inscripcions@centrelgbtibcn.org.
