Still from ‘En construcción’, the film to be shown on the last day of the series

Park Güell fills with films about Barcelona

All the films will show spectators the city’s least-known facets.

This is the first outdoor film series to be held in such an iconic venue as Gaudí’s Park Güell. It is called Barcelona en moviment (Barcelona in Motion), and it is organised by the History Museum of Barcelona (MUHBA). What all four screenings scheduled between 19 July and 9 August, always on Fridays at 10 pm, have in common is the capital city of Catalonia, not its more visible, known, touristy facet but aspects that may be more hidden or forgotten. In the words of the organisers, “alongside the formal, organised, orderly, ‘proper’ city is another one that crops up in its interstices, the undefined or supposedly forgotten spaces. Beyond the Barcelona Model, the city of Gaudí and mass tourism is another Barcelona, which isn’t an obscure  Barcelona”.

The series features films from the 1960s to the 21st century. The first one is A tiro limpio by Francisco Pérez-Dolz. Premiering in 1963, it tells the story of two men who set up a gang of thieves, and to complete the team they go looking for an old thief retired in a country estate. Also from 1963 is Los Tarantos by Francisco Rovira Beleta, the story of a clash between two Roma families of Barcelona. The performers include Antonio Gades and Carmen Amaya, and it will be shown on 26 July. One week later will come Asalto al Banco Central by Santiago Lapeira, featuring José Sacristán, Isabel Mestres and Alfred Luchetti, among others. It is the film adaptation of the famous 1981 bank heist. The last session will feature En construcción, an award-winning documentary by José Luis Guerín which premiered in 2001 after two and a half years of filming. It shows the urban and human transformation of Barcelona’s ‘Barri Xino’, or Chinatown.
