Depero and the Futuristic Reconstruction of the Universe

From the 17th of September, 2013, to the 12th of January, 2014, La Pedrera will be hosting an exhibition by the Italian futuristic artist, Fortunato Depero

The exhibition titled, Depero i la reconstrucció futurista de l’univers (The Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe) chronologically spans twenty years in the extensive career of Fortunato Depero, from the foundation of the Italian avant-garde movement in 1909, up until 1930. The artist, who was born in the small town of Fondo, in 1892, and soon after moved to Rovereto with his family, is one of the principal exponents of futurism.

His career as an artist began in 1913 when Depero moved to Rome and came into contact with F.T. Marinetti and Umberto Boccioni, among others. It was here that, as a dissident of the more orthodox aesthetics of futurism, he signed the Manifest for the Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe, alongside Giacomo Balla.
 
In 1918, Depero returned to Rovereto, where he founded the Casa d’Arte. In 1928 he travelled to New York, the futurist metropolis par excellence, where, above all, he developed his talents as a graphic designer. From his return, two years later, until his death in 1960, he continued his artistic activities, remaining faithful to the futurist movement he had helped to create.

The exhibition in the Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera is the first Depero exhibition to be held in the country. It has been organised in conjunction with the Museu di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto in an attempt to understand and evaluate the status of the avant-garde European artist who, even today, is not very well known on these shores.
