
Feminine Musical Evenings at the Monastery of Pedralbes

The Monastery of Pedralbes fills with music during three Thursdays in July (the 10th, 17th, and 24th) and hosts three concerts, all three led by female voices in various forms.
These are the Musical Evenings, a music series directed by the musician from La Canonja, Dani Espasa, which many look forward to every year, because alongside the quality of the performances there is always the unique atmosphere of contemplation and spirituality offered by the monastery cloister.
This time, the concerts are dedicated to the female voice and review the presence and creativity of women in the history of music. You will see that all the concerts have elements of dialogue between tradition, innovation, and revolution, always with the woman’s voice as an essential element, beyond different contexts and epochs.
As the first guests of the series, the girls who make up the female choir Voxalba. They perform a repertoire dedicated to the Virgin Mary and traditional Catalan songs. Spirituality, emotion, and musical tradition typical of Catalan popular culture, in a link between religious tradition and collective imagination. This first evening includes works by Arnold von Bruck, Orlando di Lasso, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Prat, McIntyre, Orbán, Busto, Bárdos, Tarridas, Saindon, Grau, and Ramírez.
Return on Thursday, July 17, and you will be able to enjoy the concert Canterere, in which the singer and instrumentalist Carola Ortiz proposes a contemporary revision of the female oral tradition of the Iberian Peninsula. How will romances and traditional songs sound to the rhythm of folk, jazz, and electronics? If you want to build bridges between past and future, Carola is waiting for you.
Finally, on Thursday, July 24, the soprano Núria Rial offers you the concert À tre, with a program made up of arias from the Renaissance and Baroque for soprano, including pieces by female composers, those who have always existed but never let us listen, like Barbara Strozzi.
