A scene from 'Padre Padrone'

The irony and poetry of the Taviani brothers at the Filmoteca

Until 20 May, we will be able to see films like 'Padre Padrone' and 'La notte di San Lorenzo'.

The premiere, on 5 April at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, of Una questione privata, the latest film by Paolo Taviani, which was written together with his brother Vittorio, marked the beginning of a cycle called Germans Taviani: la utopia com a motor devoted to the filmography of the Taviani brothers. Paolo Taviani was present both at the screening and on the following day, when he took part in a public discussion with his wife and collaborator, the costume designer Lina Nerli Taviani. However if you were unable to attend these two events, rest assured that you have until 20 May to enjoythe wealth of titles that make up the cycle.

One of the best-known films by the brothers, which will be screened on 10 April, is Padre Padrone from 1977, the story of an illiterate shepherd tiranized by his father who manages to overcome his harsh living conditions to become a professor of linguistics. Another feature film, which will be screened on 24 and 25 April, is Sotto il segno dello Scorpione, a 1968 parable on society's ills based on the confrontation between two communities on an island following a volcanic eruption. In La notte di San Lorenzo, a film dating from 1982 and scheduled for 14 and 15 April, the Taviani brothers narrate the events that took place in their home town of San Miniato in the mid-1940s. Le affinità elettive, Kaos and I sovversivi are among the other films to be screened in April. At the time of writing, the Filmoteca has yet to publish the schedule for May.
