The duo portrayed during a concert

Folk and classical notes, back and forth

Chicamocha Dúo and Luciana Jury close out a cycle at the Gabriel García Márquez Library dedicated to music born between the two shores of the Atlantic.

Europe and the American continent—those that have crossed from one shore of the ocean to the other, transforming and creating new mixed sounds. We've had a good sample since July in El vaivé, the cycle from the Gabriel García Márquez Library, a program that comes to a close on Thursday, August 7, and Wednesday, the 13th, with the last two musical performances.

The first, on Thursday, August 7 at 6:30 p.m., features the Chicamocha Dúo, formed by guitarist Carlos Barrios and flutist Javier Mendoza. Both explore Latin American sonorities with their instruments, but do so from their experience in other genres that might seem distant at first—such as jazz, chamber music, or classical sounds that they incorporate into their interpretations. A couple of years ago, the duo recorded El camino, their first full-length album, with chamber music, Colombian Andean music, and other sounds that you’ll likely hear during the concert.

El vaivé will conclude with the performance on Wednesday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m., featuring Luciana Jury, an Argentine singer and guitarist who was born on the border between the city and the rural world and draws from a mix of sounds that includes tango, rock, and cumbia. Starting from rural Argentine folk, Luciana Jury pushes it to the limit, accentuating its intensity and dramatic aspects far beyond pure folklore.

Material urgente is the album the artist released in 2023, so you may hear Negra Chacarera or Ay Paloma, two of the most popular tracks from the record.

If you want to close the El vaivé cycle and discover how the music that goes and returns sounds, come to the Gabriel García Márquez Library. But first, check the website for details about the performances.
