Serrat covers and homemade ska
The singer-songwriter Jorge Sanagustín will perform Canciones de amor y desamor, and Off-Beat Xperiment will showcase their syncopated repertoire.
On 7 September at 8 p.m., singer-songwriter Jorge Sanagustín and music producer Joan Surribas - nominated for a Latin Grammy for the album Cuba le canta a Serrat (2005) - will present Canciones de amor y desamor at the Harlem Jazz Club, accompanied by Ramón del Pichón on guitar, Toni Reyes on bass and Jack Tarradellas on percussion. The album covers a dozen of Joan Manuel Serrat's lesser-known songs with touches of ballads, rumba, jazz and Cuban son fused together. The concert is conceived as "an extraordinary tribute to love, its greatness and vulnerability" and tickets are 12 euros.
On the 9 at 11 p.m., the venue will host Abby Rubens & The Massive Brothers Band. Accompanied by Joe Psalmist (piano), Rim Akandoh (drums) and Keyz Daniel (bass and keyboards), the singer will perform most styles of the so-called black music, from blues to soul. The bar service will open at 8 p.m., and the entrance is 14 euros.
After a short vacation, the Harlem Jazz Club will resume its activity on the 28 at 10:30 p.m. with the reggae and ska of OBX. Off-Beat Xperiment is one of the most attractive, brave and original bands in Barcelona. Made up of Xavier Alomar (guitar), Sergi Carod (drums), Alberto López (bass), Quim Molera (sax), Vladimir Peña (trombone) and Rafa Rodríguez (keyboards), their artistic proposal breaks the musical monotony with amalgam bars, synthesizers and guitar solos, but always with Up-Beat as a base, be it one drop, rocksteady, ska-punk or the most classic ska-jazz. Admission is 10 euros, and the doors will open at 8 p.m.
The month will be topped off with jam sessions by the house regulars: Chino Swingdle (on the 27 at 10:30 p.m.), Mr Singles (on the 8 and 29 at 10:30 p.m.) and Chino & The Sharps (on the 10 and 30 at 11 p.m.).
