International Romani Day in Barcelona
The celebration is scheduled for 8 April and will feature activities such as a rumba festival and a flamenco show.
International Romani Day aims to highlight the recovery of Romani culture and its values and explore its history and language and, more locally, celebrate the contributions that Romani people have made to the city of Barcelona. This event-packed day is set to start at 10am on 8 April in Plaça Sant Jaume with the flying of the gypsy flag from the balcony of Barcelona town hall. But the events are not restricted to Barcelona and, for example, a floral ceremony that will consist of lighting candles and throwing petals on the river Besós is scheduled to take place in Carrer Olímpic in Sant Adrià del Besòs at 12.30pm.
In the afternoon, back in Barcelona, there will be a rumba festival in the Sala Auditori of the Liceu Conservatory, with the participation of Juanet-Patriarcas, Moncho, Maruja Garrido, Sicus, Chacho, Johnny, Candeli, Cocho, Lady Gipsy and Jack. Before the music starts, institutional speeches will be given by the Romani Municipal Council and other authorities. After the rumba, in the same venue, Seo Cizmic, with the musical accompaniment of Gennaro Spinelli, will present a theatrical performance. The day’s events will come to a close with a performance by the flamenco troupe Barrio Santiago de Jerez.
International Romani Day commemorates the first international Romani congress, which took place near London on 8 April 1971 and which agreed on the flag of the Romani people and their anthem.
