'Justícia', an ambitious play on Catalan identity
Josep Maria Mestres is directing the production at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC) with a text written by Guillem Clua, featuring an all-star cast including Josep Maria Pou and Vicky Peña.
It is predicted to become one of the hits this season. Indeed, Justícia, which will be playing in the Sala Gran at the TNC, starting 13 February, is a new play which examines such a sensitive topic as Catalan identity and features local theatre luminaries. Couple that with an ambitious stage set – designed by Paco Azorín – and the public theatre is likely to have no problems filling all its seats every night until 22 March. This is the first play that Guillem Clua has brought to the TNC, and the production is directed by Josep Maria Mestres. The cast features Manel Barceló, Alejandro Bordanove, Marc Bosch, Roger Coma, Vicky Peña, Pere Ponce, Josep Maria Pou, Anna Sahun, Anna Ycobalzeta and Katrin Vankova.
The main character of the play is a judge coming to the end of his public service, who has also had a successful career in politics. But as he winds down, ghosts from the past keep reappearing: perhaps his career wasn’t as brilliant and upright as everyone thinks. It’s time to take stock, but he doesn’t do it alone; his family, friends, those whom he made suffer, those whom he favoured… they all weigh in. In the director’s own words, “Justícia also foregrounds the issue of identity. Who are we? What are we like? Why are we like that? Where are we from? What shapes us as people, as a society, as a country?”
