Katia & Marielle Labèque at Palau de la Música

Barcelona’s Palau de la Música to host what is said to be the best piano duet in the world

French sisters Katia (born in Bayonne on 11 March 1950) and Marielle (born in Bayonne on March 6 1952) are one of the leading contemporary piano duos and play under the stage name of the Labèque Sisters. Respected and admired all around the world, the Labèque Sisters have enriched the repertoire for two pianos and percussion with works like the first instrumental version of West Side Story, transcribed by Irwin Kostal (the orchestrator of the work) and with version for two pianos and Basque percussion of Ravel’s Bolero with the group Kalakan.

Katia and Marielle created their own foundation, the "Fondazione Katia é Marielle Labeque" in Rome in 2005. This institution is designed to promote the relationship between music and images, and to support experimental music groups. Its first project in 2009 was to support the young audiovisual producer Tal Rosner. The presence of these two pianists, who are well-respected and admired artists, is sure to be one of the magical moments of the season at Palau de la Música.

They are said to be elegant, temperamental, energetic and in perfect synchronization. And as well as being acclaimed as the best piano duo in the world, they play and interpret music with an unparalleled sensibility. According to the New York Times they are, "The best piano duet in front of the audience today." We’ll have to see them live to make up our own minds. They are playing on the 23rd of February at Palau de la Música.
