The ‘Magnificat’ by John Rutter

The Municipal Band of Barcelona makes an incursion into religious music

Accompanied by a choir of 250 voices, the band will play the grandiose 'Magnificat' by English composer John Rutter and two pieces by Debussy and Tchaikovsky.

Opportunities to experience the full power of a large choir are rare, which makes this concert at the Auditori on 4 March by Municipal Band of Barcelona, as part of its regular Sunday appearances, even more of a treat. The concert in Hall 1 at the concert venue will feature three very different works. The first is the Petite Suite by Claude Debussy, a miniature impressionistic piece, which will be followed by Francesca da Rimini, a short, charming work by Tchaikovsky. Then the concert moves into high gear with a performance of the Magnificat by the British composer John Rutter, featuring the 250 voices of the Catalonia Youth Choir.

The Magnificat is a powerful composition, full of nuances, which belongs to an English tradition of religious music that runs from Purcell to John Tavener. Rutter's musical language is colourful and rhythmic, going beyond the spiritual to plunge into the colour and glitziness of popular festivals.
