A performance to illuminate the invisible corners of the mind

Val del Raval, guest in an artistic action framed within the exhibition Insania, by artist Heidi Valda.

Do you already know Val del Raval? She must be one of the most innovative and active artists of the moment—at least in the Raval neighborhood, where you’ve surely seen this performer, DJ, model, and painter at some point, embodying one of the many facets of her creative talent. Now she takes center stage in a performance you can see on Tuesday, September 9, at La Capella.

The performance is one of the activities accompanying the exhibition Insania, by Bolivian-born artist Heidi Valda (1986), who designs and produces installations, shows, and audiovisual works based on the exploration of light emitters of different kinds and characteristics: from projectors and LED strips to bioluminescent dyes. In Insania, an interactive light-and-sound installation, she embraces “damaged, broken things, the mental state in which the lines between reality and imagination do not exist.”

In the performance accompanying Insania on Tuesday, you will meet—if you haven’t already—Val del Raval, a fascinating Barcelona performer who uses her body to captivate the public with movements that are unique and full of mystery. The artist is committed to vulnerability and activation through risk acceptance. Extimacy (that is, intimacy as a public act), presence, and transversal objectification are central themes in an artistic process often driven by pain and eroticism.

You’ll see her interact with Heidi Valda’s installation in a proposal where a body interferes with light-projecting devices. This moving light projects luminous rays which, through a photoelectric cell, generate a symphony of noises. The link between body and machine creates its own language: “a monstrous communication of noises and flashes between mechanized humanity in the body and humanity applied to the machine.” All of this aims to cast a bit of light on the hardest-to-see aspects of the human mind.

If you like contemporary art and want to see in action a performer you should start following, don’t miss the performance of the exhibition Insania by Val del Raval at La Capella. But before going, check the website for more information on the proposal.
