Johnny Depp in search of the headless knight
Phenomena recovers the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow, directed by Tim Burton.
In the late 18th century, a detective is sent from New York to a town called Sleepy Hollow to investigate several recent murders. The town is convinced that they are the work of a knight who has risen from the grave, who rides around headless on his horse, and who is dedicated to scalping his victims. The detective says he doesn't believe in ghosts, but he himself will soon be able to prove that the story he is told is not made up. This plot is probably familiar to you from the horror film Sleepy Hollow, which was released to great acclaim in 1999, starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton. It also starred, among others, Christina Ricci, Michael Gambon and Miranda Richardson. Since it left theatres, it has been shown several times on television. But there's nothing like a big screen, so if you want to see it again - or see it for the first time - Sleepy Hollow in a cinema, the Phenomena will be showing it on Saturday 29 July at 3.20 pm. Tickets can be bought in advance.
There is no shortage of love stories in the film either. In fact, when the detective sees that the investigation is going to take a long time, he adopts the identity of a schoolteacher and soon falls in love with a local girl. The film was described by critics as "an entertaining and eccentric horror story that plunges the viewer into a dreamlike, bloody nightmare", and also as "a prodigy between horror and humour, combining thrills and shocks". It won the Oscar for Best Art Direction.
