Poetry and Walks with Views of the Sea and the City
The Gardens and Poetry by the Sea tour invites you to discover a little-known garden while listening to verses by great poets.
If you enjoy strolling and also love poetry, don’t miss this chance to connect with some of the great masters of Catalan literature while exploring the Jacint Verdaguer Gardens—a hidden gem in Montjuïc that many have yet to discover. The tour, organized by the Museum of the History of Barcelona, takes place on June 4, with sessions at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Everything happens in the Jacint Verdaguer Gardens, a unique spot where a mix of bulbous, rhizomatous, and aquatic plants creates a distinctive atmosphere. You’ll see water cascading from one pool to the next, flowing through a lush green setting of remarkable beauty. Because the garden is on a slope, the water flows down in steps, and from the top of the garden, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Barcelona and the sea.
Neighboring the Joan Brossa garden and the Tres Pins nursery, this garden is located in a former quarry and was inaugurated in June 1970, along with the nearby Mossèn Costa i Llobera and Joan Maragall gardens—all named after poets. From that same year is the sculpture The Girl with the Lilies (1970), a bronze work by Ramon Sabí Serra situated near the pond, paying tribute to Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer, the poet after whom the park is named. The statue includes an inscription with verses from the poet.
These won’t be the only verses you’ll hear during the walk (the garden contains more sculptures and inviting spots to stop and rest), as throughout the tour, the rhapsodist Francesc Marginet will recite poems by essential Catalan authors, including Jacint Verdaguer, Joan Maragall, Josep Carner, Miquel Costa i Llobera, Mercè Rodoreda, Joan Brossa, Joana Raspall, Àngel Guimerà, Clementina Arderiu, Maria Antònia Salvà, and Joan Salvat-Papasseit.
If you want to discover a part of the city you may not have seen before, enjoy an exceptional and unique garden, and have poetry whispered nearly in your ear, don’t miss the Gardens and Poetry by the Sea tour. But make sure to register first on the Museum of the History of Barcelona’s website.
