Sitges 2014 is here

The 47th edition of Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival will offer more than 300 films from the 3rd to the 12th of October

The extensive and eclectic programme for Sitges 2014, the 47th edition of the event, consists of more than 300 films. The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival is considered the foremost festival of the genre in the world and this year’s edition will take place from the 3rd to the 12 of October. As is customary, Catalan film will be featured in all the festival’s sections, in particular the screening of Jaume Balagueró’s [REC] 4 as the inaugural film. The festival also includes a tribute to the well-known saga.

Among other films, this edition will include such memorable films as Maps to the Stars, Goodbye to Language and Under the Skin. The first of these, directed by David Cronenberg, is a ruthless tale about the Hollywood underworld which earned Julianne Moore the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Festival. In the second film, legendary French film maker Jean-Luc Godard experiments with 3D, while in the third, Scarlett Johannson takes on the role of an alien who lands on Earth.

Notably entries in the Official Section include the psychological terror of Goodbye Mommy, the supernatural-ish bullying of Jamie Mark is Dead, the apocalyptic Western The Rover, the flat-mate vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows, the darkness of The Double and the surrealism of The Distance, by Sergio Caballero, co-director and head of the graphic imagery projected during the Sónar music festival. Other sections will include the Iranian slasher Fish & Cat, Kim Ki-Duk’s One on One, the winner on the last San Sebastián Magical GirlWild Tales and the documentary dealing with zombie pop culture, Doc of the Dead.

As with every year, zombies will have their day at the Sitges Festival with the annual Zombie Walk on Saturday the 4th of October, in which anyone who should so desire is free to dress up as a zombie and parade through the city. Curiously enough, the closing film of the festival, Burying the Ex deals with precisely this subject.

The 47th edition of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia will take place from the 3rd to the 12th of October. Tickets start at 4.50 €, depending on the section, and passes for multiple screenings are available. More information is available here.
