‘Tosca’

Puccini's ‘Tosca’, at the Liceu

One of the most celebrated Italian operas, with a struggle of hate, love, passion, violence and religion.

Tosca is a melodramatic opera in three acts that Italian composer Giacomo Puccini adapted from the libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa based on Victorien Sardou's play La Tosca. After its premiere on 14 January 1900 at Teatro Costanzi in Rome, this piece immediately became a huge hit and, over the years, has become one of the most well-known Italian operas. This June, Tosca is back at the Liceu, with staging by Paco Azorín and a top-notch cast that features Liudmyla Monastyrska, Tatiana Serjan, Jonathan Tetelman, Roberto Aronica, Erwin Schrott and Lucio Gallo in the starring roles. In occupied Rome under Napoleon, Tosca follows his motto of living for art and dying for love. The perfect love triangle of Cavaradossi, Tosca and Scarpia develops in a context where hate, love, passion, violence and religion all go hand-in-hand. The staging and scenography follow the original down to the last detail, which shows that Puccini's piece is still relevant and modern.

Barcelona audiences can enjoy Tosca with conductor John Fiore on several days from 9 to 28 June. As we've said, it will be at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. This nearly three-hour show packed with passion, fighting and sacrifice shows why Puccini was one of the masters of Verismo.

There are tickets at a huge range of prices, from €13.65 – €317.90. You can get yours on the Gran Teatre del Liceu website.
