A guided tour organised by El Born CCM

Memories of colonial Barcelona

El Born CCM organises a guided tour to explain the importance of relations with the American and African continents in the urban and social construction of the city.

On 12 and 16 October and 20 November, always starting at noon, there is a guided tour in Catalan entitled Esclavisme i ciutat. Una memòria colonial de Barcelona, organised by El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria. It lasts two hours, and tickets must be booked in advance by calling El Born CCM on +34 93 256 68 50 or by sending an email to reserveselbornccm@eicub.net.

The itinerary begins at El Born CCM itself and will look for those constructions and spaces that are examples to explain that the Barcelona we know today would not be the same without the colonial transfers between the city and the American and African continents. And not only in terms of urban planning but also when it comes to customs: it was around 1700 that the fashion for drinking chocolate, coffee and smoking tobacco — all products that had come from far away — exploded. From the 19th century, we can highlight the buildings the Indianos built on their return from America after having made their fortune. But we must remember and reflect, as we will do on this route, that the glorious story linking colonialism and modernity has also often hidden the stories of exploitation and inequality or directly of slavery. If you are interested in the subject, note that, as well as being able to sign up for the itinerary, a few months ago, El Born CCM organised a conference entitled Esclavisme a Barcelona. Una història silenciada, which you can watch at this link.
