A scene from Works in silence

The choreographer Lucinda Childs recovers her early works

They date from the 1970s and will be performed at the Mercat de les Flors by the company Dance On Ensemble.

Lucinda Childs was born in New York 82 years ago and is considered one of the most outstanding choreographers of the 20th century, with proposals characterised by minimalist body movements and complex transitions, transforming the slightest movements into great choreographic masterpieces. In the 1970s, she created pieces that sought the essence of movement, the act of walking, and then moved from walking to running, and from running to jumping. The author dispensed with any object on stage and also with the spoken word, thus turning the page on the Judson Dance Theatre era. At the Mercat de les Flors, on 3 and 4 March, Childs will revive some of these choreographies, grouped under the title Works in silence. They will be performed by the company Dance On Ensemble, founded in 2015 by the Berlin-based non-profit organisation Bureau Ritter as part of the Dance On initiative, which celebrates the artistic excellence of dancers over the age of 40 and explores the relationship between dance and age, both on stage and in society. Performing for the audience will be Alba Barral Fernández, Ty Boomershine, Anna Herrmann, Emma Lewis, Gesine Moog and Lia Witjes-Poole. The staging is by Ty Boomershine.

The revival of the choreographies of Works in Silence, which have not been performed on stage since their premiere over forty years ago, forms part of a cycle that the Mercat de les Flors is dedicating to this creator, entitled "Constellation Lucinda Childs". Throughout her career, the New Yorker has worked for companies such as the Paris Opera Ballet, the Ballets de Monte Carlo, the Lyon Opera Ballet, the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Berlin Opera Ballet.
