Neodystopia: the dystopia of the 21st century
The dystopian genre has undergone several transformations since the beginning of the 21st century, which has led to what Roger González refers to in his doctoral thesis as neodystopia. In this talk, the audiovisual scholar takes a tour of cinematic dystopias, starting with Aelita or Metropolis, looking at films from the 1960s and 1970s such as Soylent Green, Logan's Run or Planet of the Apes, right up to the productions that appeared since 2000, from Minority Report to Black Mirror. Passionate about this subgenre of science fiction, González will explain, with these examples, the changes detected in dystopian patterns, such as the increase in revolutionary possibilities, greater prominence of women, young people and the lower classes, and the hybridisation of other genres, such as comedy or the superhero genre. Are you ready to enter the second golden age of dystopia?
