Presentation of the Maielis González’s Palenque and Juan Mattio’s Materiales para una pesadilla
Palenque tells the story of Aurelia, a young Black enslaved woman who flees into the forest in search of freedom. This novel interweaves 19th-century science, Gothic horror, magical realism and Afrofuturist fantasy.
Materiales para una pesadilla: a man inherits something strange from a woman he once loved. It is an unfinished investigation into how a group of writers, linguists and psychologists collaborated with the Argentine military dictatorship of 1976 to develop a surveillance system capable of detecting dissident words in phone conversations. In trying to make sense of and continue the work, the narrator gets lost in the labyrinths of the past, which also connect to another ghost: Haruka, a Japanese hacker who goes underground in 2036 after creating an immersive social network that even allows users to interact with the dead.
