Queer worldbuilding: How to build non-heteronormative universes
The creation of a new world is one of the cornerstones of fantasy genres, as it opens up the possibility of reflecting on current concerns in other contexts or dreaming up plots that would be impossible in our reality. But is it possible to create a new universe far from the conventions of our own? Can we question this world’s identity, gender privileges and barriers to self-affirmation? In this workshop, H. Zubieta – one of the leading names in queer literary activism on the Iberian Peninsula – looks at the problems we face when trying to avoid our biases and presents methods for imagining societies free of oppression or discrimination, for example. This is a unique opportunity to learn about a different approach to worldbuilding and the creation of cosmogonies from the perspective of a trans and non-binary activist.
