Virtual book club: Reading genre at Festival 42
To rev our engines up for the Festival 42, we’ll read two genre classics under the guidance of the author Roser Cabré-Verdiell. La paret [The Wall] by Marlen Haushofer is a hypnotic, dystopian novel that reflects on solitude, nature and the human condition. It is a literary gem that connects with ecology, feminism and philosophy. La loteria i altres contes [The Lottery and Other Stories] is a compilation of some of Shirley Jackson's most celebrated short stories, which explore madness, alienation and the horror hidden at home, in the heart of every family and in the heart of every one of us. Jackson is a master at portraying banal cruelty, the disarray of wasted lives and the terror lying dormant in everyday calmness.
Leader: Roser Cabré-Verdiell is the author of the novels Que morin els fills dels altres (Males Herbes, 2025) and AIOUA (Males Herbes, 2022), the winner of the Finestres and 42 awards. She has published as numerous short stories in anthologies like Autòctones (Comanegra, 2023), Barcelona 2059 (Mai Més, 2021), Extraordinàries (Males Herbes, 2020), Estats alterats de la ment (Males Herbes, 2017) and Deu relats ecofuturistes (Males Herbes, 2016), among others. Her story Soc la llevadora, which was included in Extraordinàries, won the 2021 Ictineu award. She also works with Catorze and has contributed to the literary creation magazines Paper de Vidre, Carn de Cap and Branca.
