Creator of icons: The genius of David Lloyd and the faces of rebellion
If there’s a single image that can symbolise rebellion, anarchy and the fight against oppression, it’s undoubtedly the mask from V for Vendetta. Illustrator David Lloyd is the man behind this iconic design, which has not only survived the passage of time, but also become more popular over the years. With this great story written by Alan Moore, later adapted to film, the British illustrator showed how a wide range of emotions could be expressed without bright colours, just through the characters’ gestures. He later recreated these characteristics in another of the major works he contributed to: Hellblazer. Lloyd’s extensive career has led him to work with the most prestigious writers in the world of comics, including Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis. He will talk about this dazzling career with the 42 Festival assistant curator, Karen Madrid, who, like many others of her generation, was introduced to the world of comics by Lloyd’s images.
