MiévilleCon 2. Releasing the Kraken: Monstrosity in the work of China Miéville
As well as being the standard-bearer for the term ‘new weird’ and writing in sometimes unclassifiable genres, China Miéville is also fascinated by monsters. In fact, this is a recurring theme in many of his works, including the popular novel Perdido Street Station, part of the Bas-Lag Trilogy. His fascination with the monstrous has also translated into talks and articles on the subject, including his famous essay Theses on Monsters. This round table – the second in MiévilleCon – will analyse the types of monsters created by Miéville, what they represent within his work and what they have contributed to the international pantheon of monsters. The participants will be Silvia Schettin, a translator of Miéville’s work and communicator; Lola Robles, a writer and communicator; Pablo Mallorquí, co-director of the podcast Esperant el cometa, and Inés MacPherson, author of Els fils del mar (Spècula). They will be moderated by the creator of this series on Miéville, author Cristina Jurado.
