Barcelona City Council’s Spatial Data Infrastructure GeoPortal
Barcelona City Council’s Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) GeoPortal centralises and facilitates access to the municipality’s geographical information. This portal provides a single platform where members of the public, companies and professionals can find a complete inventory of cartographic resources related to territorial management, planning and organisation.
GeoPortal: Contents and Benefits
Access to Territorial Information
The GeoPortal offers a wide range of cartography tools and services. These include the Viewer, which allows users to overlay geographical data layers onto a digital map using both their own and third-party data, and the Cartography Download Centre, where users can access and download geospatial data in a variety of formats. This resource is essential for professionals and companies that need up-to-date cartographic data for planning, research or territorial management projects.
The SDI also provides web mapping services to make the municipality’s territorial information available using established technical standards (Open Geospatial Consortium, OGC). This infrastructure facilitates other organisations’ automated integration of municipal cartography ensuring that all data can be combined and used efficiently and interoperably.
Interoperability and Regulatory Compliance
In accordance with European Directive 2007/2/EC (INSPIRE) and its transposition into Spanish Law 14/2010 on geographical information infrastructures and services (LISIGE), the GeoPortal ensures that information is obtained from where it is maintained, allowing data from different sources to be combined for maximum effectiveness. This assures that the data meet European and Spanish legislation’s quality and interoperability standards.
Resources for Professionals and Businesses
The GeoPortal is intended to be a valuable tool for professional groups, municipal service companies and utilities that use the City Council’s cartography as a starting point for their planning and territorial consultation. It also facilitates the implementation of interoperable cartography by public service and maintenance companies operating within the municipality.
Transparency
The GeoPortal promotes transparency in public administration by giving society easy access to geographical information.
