Confidències a Al·là

Saphia Azzeddine / Magda Puyo

Humour, music and movement become instruments to denounce male oppression, prejudice and fundamentalism in a show that revolves around a Berber shepherdess.

The two actresses who star in this play tell the story of Jbara, a shepherdess who lives in the mountains of North Africa with her parents, brothers and sisters and the sheep they tend. Jbara is pretty, but is not even aware of this, because she was born into a world where she is considered a sort of servant and treated brutally. Taught to submit, she occasionally earns some money or food by working as a prostitute, though she barely realises what she is doing. Even so, she continues to put her faith in her God. Can anyone who lives in these conditions be free? Then everything changes when, one day, a car full of American tourists drives past her home, suddenly opening a window onto an unknown world. Confidències a Al·là gives us a glimpse into the lives of oppressed women, a world where, despite the cruelty of the situations portrayed, laughter and poetry can also exist. The play is based on the debut novel of Saphia Azzedine, a writer of Moroccan origin, which takes the form of a long monologue addressed to Allah.
