El carrer Franklin

Lluïsa Cunillé / Josep Maria Miró

A really smart, cutting madcap comedy by one of Catalonia's finest playwrights. You won't be able to stop laughing, even as you learn about a crisis that has profoundly changed our society.

Like most of the city, Franklin Street is becoming deserted due to a wave of evictions. A local transvestite resident who gives music classes and her husband, a taxi driver by trade, are the latest victims in a frenzy that not only their sister-in-law and sister, an activist who goes around the half-empty city, megaphone in hand, has been able to stop. Meanwhile, this resident, an Englishwoman, niece of the late Margaret Thatcher, has just received part of her aunt’s ashes... This crazy, acid tale has it all, even the governor of the Bank of Spain, ignored by everyone, who is desperately trying to find a compromising letter that he has lost. El carrer Franklin is a critique of a society that has suddenly become quite insensitive to such basic rights as housing and work. The play, haunted by Thatcherian ghosts, is by an author who has already won the National Prize for Dramatic Literature (2009), the National Theatre Prize (2007) and the City of Barcelona Prize (2004) and now returns to demonstrate her mastery of the art of comedy.
