Quim Girón / Moon Ribas

This is a show that is especially fresh and full of poetry. Ice, in its various states, is the protagonist of a mise-en-scène designed by a contemporary circus artist and a cyborg performer.

You may have heard of Moon Ribas, an avant-garde artist from Mataró who one day decided to apply cybernetics to art and her own body. For more than six years she has had sensors implanted in her feet, allowing her to detect the movement of the Earth's crust in real time and apply it to her choreographic creations. Now Ribas has found common ground with Quim Girón, one of the key creative talents of Catalan contemporary circus, who in his eternal quest to find new styles works with elements ranging from balance and sound to animal movement. Their collaborative scenic offering explores the uncontrollable force of nature and seeks to understand scientific processes whose ability to inspire awe is not diminished by their commonplaceness. On the stage there is little more than a freezer, from which blocks of ice are issued. The performers handle them and use them to lend form to different universes, they dance on them with crampons and they show how the temperature melts them, soaking their bodies. Where is the ice? The water that floods the stage and wets the performers highlights its ephemeral nature. You will think about that while you listen to the electronic music that accompanies the evolutions of the performers and the rich diversity of sounds they generate as they interact with ice, water and gas as diverse physical states of a single reality. This fun and accessible show invites you to ask how nature works, to see natural phenomena from another perspective and also to realise that in our own way each one of us is also a small phenomenon.

Quim Girón is the founder of the company Animal Religion, with which he has devised the shows Indomador, Fang and Nu, to name but a few. He has studied circus at the School of Dance and Circus in Stockholm (Sweden), performed throughout Europe, Asia and South America and won awards such as the City of Barcelona Special Award (2015) for the show Sifonòfor, the FiraTàrrega Award for Best Street and Unconventional Show Premiere for Chicken Legz (2014) and the Zirkolika Grand Prix for Best Circus Stage Show, also for Sifonòfor (2015).

Moon Ribas, for her part, has worked in video dance, creating works such as Walking Colours. She became known to the public due to the sensors she had implanted in her feet to convert the movement of the Earth's crust into choreographies such as Waiting for Earthquakes. In 2010, she created the Cyborg Foundation along with another cyborg artist, Neil Harbisson.

A 2021 Grec Festival de Barcelona and Sismògraf Festival of Olot co-production.
