Ayn Rand / Ivo van Hove / Toneelgroep Amsterdam

Individuality and altruism, inspiration and engagement, innovation and tradition... Life is a war of ideas, and the writer Ayn Rand had no doubts which side she was on. Ivo van Hove, director of one of the biggest hits at Grec 2013, adapts Rand's most famous novel for the stage.

What should an artist do - remain faithful to his or her ideals, or betray them in order to ensure success? Should artists sacrifice themselves to their own principles or survive by adapting to the needs of the community? The author Ayn Rand answered these questions in 1943 in a bestseller that focuses on the struggle between individualism and collectivism, not only in the political arena but also, and above all, in the human soul. The story she recounts in The Fountainhead centres on an architect, Howard Roark, who refuses to compromise his artistic vision, even though this condemns him to failure and oblivion. Rand uses the world of architecture, at a time when modern 20th-century trends were challenging the dominant classical styles, as a metaphor to explore themes such as art, creativity and integrity. However, this is also the story of the romance between Roark and his lover, Dominique Francon, two souls determined to achieve freedom and independence. Live music by composers who experimented with new sounds in the early-20th century, and video footage showing architectural sketches and newspaper articles are amongst the resources used to illustrate this story about creativity and personal ideals.

Having thrilled Barcelona audiences at Grec 2013 with their reworking of Shakespeare’s Roman Tragedies, director Ivo van Hove and the Toneelgroep Amsterdam theatre company now take on the challenge of bringing Rand’s novel to the stage.
