Yourcenar, who rarely revealed her true feelings in public, opens her heart in Fires to speak plainly about the heartbreak she endured, expressing her sorrow through the voice of such classical heroines as Clytemnestra, Sappho and Mary Magdalene. Based on the poetic prose in this book and other texts by the French author, the director Josep Maria Pou and the dramaturg Marc Rosich have created a dramatic piece in which Carmen Machi personifies the voice of the novelist, whilst the rest of the cast (Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, Nathalie Poza and Ana Torrent) play the roles of the various heroines that, like masks, enable Yourcenar to describe the desperation and torture caused by her disappointment. An intense, passionate drama set against the backdrop of the classical world that always fascinated the author.
