Gustavo Cordera & La Caravana Mágica

Los dementes me acompañan

Cumbia, techno and rock are fused in the songs of an Argentinian musician with a conscience, in Barcelona to perform the music that has made him a star in his own country.

As his many Argentinian fans know, Gustavo Cordera is a singer-songwriter and showman. Most first discovered him when he was the lead singer with Bersuit Vergarabat (later known as La Bersuit; don’t reach for your dictionary, because these names are made-up words), a band renowned for its fusion of South American sounds like cumbia and tango with rock. Their socially-engaged lyrics also helped to shoot them to fame. In 2009, though, Gustavo Cordera left the band to pursue a solo career, a year later founding La Caravana Mágica, his current group, which serves up a fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds. Engaged with social issues and always a support of the underdog, the band was a scourge for the government of Carlos Menem in its day. Now, Gustavo Cordera regales his Barcelona fans with a repertoire of tunes that have made him popular in Argentina, ranging from numbers he first recorded with Bersuit, such as La soledad, Un pacto and La del toro, and the hits he has turned out with La Caravana Mágica, including La bomba loca, Soy mi soberano and Agua de río.
