Did you know that in 1939, the poet Pablo Neruda and the Chilean Foreign Minister, Abraham Ortega, opened Chile's doors to over 2,000 exiled Spanish republicans? What happened is explained in a comic.

The comic is the work of the illustrator Antonia Santolaya, based on a story by Laura Martel. Laura Martel has also written a play, directed by Norbert Martínez, that should have been shown at this year's Grec. For the moment, that has proved to be impossible (it will be staged at the Teatre Akadèmia during the 2020-2021 season, under the Festival's label), but Barcelona Libraries has organised a talk with the authors. They have presented us with a gripping story: a poet and a politician who used everything within their power to charter a vessel, the Winnepeg, to take over 2,000 republican refugees, who were fleeing from Franco's troops, to Chile. The authors explain how they researched, wrote and created the story, along with the process of getting it published.
