Geographically speaking, they are both from the same country, Uruguay, and artistically they both inhabit the same planet, music. They first began working together fifteen years ago, and now team up once more to present an electro-acoustic show that highlights their enormous combined talent.
Frontera, the album that the Uruguayan songwriter Jorge Drexler released in 1999, marked the beginning of a collaboration that has kept him in intermittent contact with the French-Uruguayan musician Luciano Supervielle ever since. They had not worked together since 2006, but the Perfume tour, which takes its name from a song that combines Drexler’s poetry with Supervielle’s musical mastery, sees them teaming up once. The composer of Al otro lado del río (which won him an Oscar for best original song) is a great admirer of Supervielle, a musician, composer and producer of French mother and Uruguayan father who first made his name in the hip-hop scene of Montevideo before going on to form the electronic tango band Bajofondo with several Argentinian musicians. Supervielle is quite a celebrity in Uruguay and Argentina, and Drexler has no hesitation in considering him his go-to contemporary musician. Teaming up with Carles Campi Campón, a producer and musician from Viladecans, a town just outside Barcelona, the pair have concocted a minimalist electro-acoustic show in which piano and guitar share the stage with sampling and scratching. The setlist will feature not only tracks from all Drexler’s albums, but also tunes by Supervielle and songs written together and in which these great artists mutually “contaminate” each other to produce hybrid pieces.
