Cia. Vero Cendoya

In her latest show, a choreographer who has worked in a range of artistic fields combines dance and football. In "The Match" , movements typical of this sport are turned into a contemporary dance number, and vice versa.

In a country obsessed by football, contemporary dance, a minor art form, takes on the “king of sport”. However, in this case, sport and artistic sensibility are ingredients in the same recipe. Our chef is Vero Cendoya cook, dancer, choreographer and painter, who had previously fused contemporary dance with other disciplines, from poetry to hip hop, visual art and even quick-change artistry. Now, however, she goes one step further and brings together five footballers, five dancers and a referee on a stage that has been converted into a football pitch, or a football pitch turned into a stage, whichever you prefer. All this, to take us on a journey in which one same passion takes us from art to sport and from sport to art. A soundtrack composed by Adele Madau and performed live accompanies the choreography, a show in which the audience, seated around the stage, also plays an active role, as occurs in a football match. Inspired by Paolo Zucca’s 2013 film The Referee, Vero Cendoya’s new work not only speaks to us about football and dance, but also poses questions about these two disciplines that take things much deeper: What values govern our society? Where is the dividing line between sport and entertainment? What are the most essential needs of human beings? And, most importantly: Could dance ever become mass entertainment?

A show in the form of a football match, or a football match in dance, with texts by Eduardo Galeano recited by Blanca Portillo. La partida received the award for best new street show at FiraTàrrega 2015 and the Barcelona Critics’@ Award for Best Street Art Show.
