Tanit Plana

The tension between light and dark, life and death, all and nothing permeate birth, intense moments and mysteries that range from mysticism to politics, which a visual artist and her accomplices have turned into an equation that combines imagery, music and dance.

Tanit Plana was born in Barcelona in 1975 and is well known for her photographic work, which raises questions, especially in regard to matters involving the family and the domestic, intimate space. She has carried out photographic research projects that have won all kinds of awards. No wonder that L’Auditori asked her to create a show to establish a dialogue between images and other disciplines. She chose to combine them with music and dance. A production about being born, gestation and childbirth which, as the American writer Siri Hustvedt noted in her book Memories of the Future, thinkers throughout history have dedicated little attention to. We are invited to celebrate life, to feel perinatal death, rebel against obstetric violence and surrender to the power of childbirth: the origin of the world. Her companions on this journey to the beginning of life are Lluïsa Espigolé, a pianist who specialises in contemporary experimental music, and Candela Capitán, the radical, ground-breaking dancer and choreographer from Cádiz, who is taking part in a theatrical experience for the first time and promises to leave no one feeling indifferent. She is an especially powerful artist, the creator of very striking images.

All three artists have shaped a production imagined by Tanit Plana, which is part of l’Auditor’s Escenes series, a cycle with a special focus on new creations combining various artistic languages. This year, the series is entitled Dones i creació [Women and Creation], and three of the shows (this one, a creation by the actress and director Alba Pujol and another by the pianist and composer Marina Herlop) are part of the 2021 Barcelona Grec Festival programme.

The Part project goes way beyond L’Auditori. In July, there will be a photographic exhibition at the Alalimón Galería on Carrer de Mèxic.

A 2021 Barcelona Grec Festival and L'Auditori co-production.

With the support of the Catalan Ministry of Culture.
