Reglas, usos y costumbres en la sociedad moderna

Although most works by this playwright – amongst the contemporary authors whose plays are most seen on the French stage – are tinged with melancholy, this piece adopts a comic style to rework, in highly ironic fashion, an etiquette book written in the late-19th century. In its day, Baroness Staffe’s Les regles du savoir vivre dans la societé contemporaine was the guide to good manners. Taking this material as his starting point, Lagarce builds up a monologue that lambasts a society plagued by rules that force us to bottle up our very feelings. All this, through a single character, a teacher giving lessons on how to face the great events in life.
