In this, his third incursion into the world of Tennessee Williams, Mario Gas stages the story of Blanche du Bois and the storm she unleashes when she visits the home of her sister, Stella, and her brother-in-law, Stanley, a worker of Polish origin. This production focuses particularly on the themes of class differences, the need for love and the risk becoming an outcast that anyone who takes a risk must run. Whilst remaining faithful to Williams’ text, Gas presents a different vision of the characters compared to the film version. The director strips Stanley of the glamour that Marlon Brando brought to the role, accentuating, rather, his rough, violent nature and restoring Blanche to her central position as the play hurtles towards its tragic finale.
