A consolidated tourist destination

Eight months of healthy figures for tourism and commerce in the city reaffirm Barcelona as a consolidated destination. The goal is to maintain close ties between economic and social bodies and work together on strategies to manage tourism properly to make it more sustainable and more decentralised, improving its social impact.

Over 8.1 million tourists have visited the city since the start of the year, some 6.3% more than last year, meaning more overnight stays in city hotels and tourist accommodation (HUT).

Figures show a 7.2% increase in overnight stays at hotels and a 14.2% increase in stays at tourist accommodation, confirming it as an increasingly popular accommodation option. Occupancy in the summer averaged 90%, with a 2.3% increase in average turnover among hotels and a 6.3% increase for tourist lets.

International tourism grew by 8.5% and compensates for the drop in domestic tourism (-3.6%), although both visitor profiles stayed for longer on average, ranging from between 1.7 nights for domestic tourism to 2.7 nights for tourism from abroad. The countries of origin accounting for the most visitors to the city are France, USA, UK and Italy.

Improved economic impact

Unemployment figures for the tourist sector are lower in 2019 than in 2018 in all months and in all sub-sectors: food and drink, accommodation services and travel agencies and tourist operators. Nearly 157,000 employment contracts have been made in the tourist sector, a rise of 9.6% compared to the previous year.

Registered unemployment has dropped compared to the previous year, but at a rhythm which is slowing up.

And commerce?

Commerce in Barcelona accounted for 13.6% of jobs in the city, employing a total of 152,092 people. Barcelona commerce has generated net employment for the fourth year running, although at a slower rate than Barcelona’s economy as a whole: 0.5% compared to 2.9% overall.
