Democracy and freedom take centre stage in the Republic Spring 2023

Activities are being held to commemorate the Second Republic from 12 to 16 April, with the main focus on the defence of democracy and freedom in the 1930s. Debates, shows, lectures, book presentations and concerts all make up this year’s programme.

Under the slogan “Refuge of dreams”, this year’s Republican Spring regains the ideal which led citizens to imagine a freer and fairer society during this period.

One of the main activities is being organised at El Born CCM, with the interactive show “My voice, my refuge”. Members of the public will attend a radio programme with readings of letters and articles by women who lived during the Second Spanish Republic, such as María de la O Lejárraga, María Zambrano, Irene Polo and Roser Català.

The programme also includes activities such as the artistic installation “The war we didn’t experience. Third generation art and memory” at El Born CCM, the lecture “The voice of Teodor Garriga”, about the broadcaster with the Ràdio Associació de Catalunya whose characteristic voice announced the air-raid warnings during the Spanish Civil War, plus the concert “Sounds of freedom”, with various artists in Pl. Comercial on 15 April.

A historical information panel will also be unveiled in memory of Josep Lluís Facerias, the last anarchist anti-Francoist guerrilla fighter killed by Franco’s police in Barcelona, with the traditional parade and wreath-laying also in the programme.

The full agenda of activities can be found on the Republican Spring website.
