The Aurora municipal nursery school, an example of a new education model for toddlers

The new EBM Aurora municipal nursery school joins the school year with a pioneering education model including flexible hours and a new socio-educational service for vulnerable families. The new centre means Barcelona now has 101 publicly owned nursery schools, one of the most extensive networks in Europe.

The neighbourhood of El Raval has a new nursery school, the EBM Aurora. The facility is running two key pilot schemes representing an upgrade to the educational model for children up to the age of 3. The nursery will start operating as from 8 January.

The innovative measures implemented by the Aurora are the result of a revamped approach to education for babies and young children, addressed during the programme ‘Impulsem educació i petita infància’, a project started in 2017 to review and reformulate education at municipal nursery schools.

Flexible hours

The new centre offers new choices of hours with four groups of toddlers which allow for greater flexibility and compatibility with family life:

  • Nursing babies: 9 am to 4 pm
  • Toddlers aged from 1 to 2: 9 am to 4 pm
  • Toddlers aged from 2 to 3: 9 am to 4 pm
  • Toddlers aged from 1 to 3: 9 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm

The educational approach is based on the development of cognitive, physical, emotional and social capacities among babies and toddlers, combining care, play and discovery. At the same time, families are made more involved in sharing in the care and education of their children.

Socio-educational family space

The Aurora is also running a pioneering project for families with children at risk of exclusion, with a socio-educational family service providing support from professionals from social and educational fields. The goals of this service are to strengthen families’ social ties, prevent their isolation and promote care and bonds with young children, with adults jointly taking responsibility.

The service is part of the network of educational and community services in Ciutat Vella, with up to 33% of places in each group reserved for vulnerable families referred by social services.

To access the service, families can approach the centre directly or seek a referral from Primary Healthcare Centres (CAP), social services or other resources such as the Ciutat Vella Child Development and Preventative Care Centre.

Access criteria for the EBM Aurora

Places at the EBM Aurora are offered to families on the waiting lists for the Ciutat Vella municipal nursery schools EBM Cadí, EBM Mon Tàber and EBM Canigó, according to the eligibility scores established in the pre-enrolment process. If all the places are not filled, available places will be offered to families on the waiting lists for the EBM Nic (Sants Montjuïc) and the EBM Tres Tombs (Eixample).
