Barcelona, City of Science and Innovation 2018

Barcelona has received the distinction of “City of Science and Innovation” for 2018 for its commitment to investment in innovative scientific, technological and social infrastructures, and its notable support for innovation within its boundaries.

The distinction was awarded by the Secretariat of State for Universities, Research, Development and Innovation, which highlighted the fundamental role played by local entities for achieving the cohesion of innovation stakeholders, thanks to a local approach with citizens, enterprises, institutions and public bodies.

The distinction also takes into account the effort in boosting scientific, technological and social infrastructures, to help to bring about a change of economic model and improve the pattern of growth, based on knowledge and innovation.

Barcelona received the distinction in the category of cities with over 100,000 residents, along with Castellón de la Plana and Vigo.

Thanks to this recognition, Barcelona has joined the RED INNPULSO network of cities for science and innovation, a meeting forum for all distinguished local authorities for defining and advancing in innovative local policies.
